Brandywine Singers slate U.S. premiere of 'Mass for 16 Voices'

Feb 21, 2016 12:53PM, Published by J. Chambless, Categories: News, Arts+Entertainment, Today

The Brandywine Singers will follow up their successful December 2015 Wilcock’s Magnificat performance this March with the U.S. premiere of Dr. Ryan Kelly’s new edition of Fasch’s Mass for 16 Voices.

Audiences will savor the 16 parts intricately woven to create a delicate tapestry of sound. The Mass was a lifelong project of Fasch, a piece that he hoped would make his mark on music. The first publication was in 1839, four decades after the composer’s death. The Brandywine Singers will be performing Kelly’s edition, completed in 2015 and published by Carus-Verlag.

This concert will also feature Poulenc’s Lenten Motets. In stark contrast to the delicate Fasch Mass, Poulenc’s motets have a much heavier hand. His dramatic 20th-century Parisian compositional style demands a highly emotional offering from the singer.

Performances will take place:

Saturday, March 12, 7 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill

Sunday, March 13 at 4 p.m. at Saint Francis in the Fields, Malvern

The Brandywine Singers is a non-profit choral ensemble based in West Chester, under the direction of Jonathan Kreamer. Established in 1993 by retired West Chester University professor Lois Williams, the ensemble provides an avenue for young musicians to make the transition from college music student to professional musician by providing an atmosphere where the highest caliber of music is demanded. The singers present repertoire from over 700 years of choral music and have partnered with many leading arts organizations in the Philadelphia area.

The group will also perform on May 7, presenting Mozart's Requiem with the Chesco Pops.
